Bomb Blasts Peruvian Embassy In Athens

ATHENS - A bomb exploded outside a central Athens apartment housing the Peruvian embassy on Monday and one woman was injured by flying glass, police said.

They said the bomb had been planted outside the entrance of the apartment on the second floor of the building and caused slight damage.

The "Guerrilla Fighting Group," a militant leftist group, claimed responsibility in a telephone call to an Athens newspaper.

The anonymous caller said the attack was staged as a demonstration of solidarity with the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) guerrillas who have been holding 83 hostages in the residence of the Japanese ambassador in Lima since December 17.

They are pressing for improved conditions for jailed comrades and recognition of their movement.

Greek police evacuated the building locating the Peruvian embassy which is a block away from the U.S. embassy.
